He was also raised by the late Leonard Scher.   Bill graduated from Hammond Clark High School in 1958.   He  worked as a Hammond Firefighter for 31 years serving as Senior Captain and was twice elected as President of the Firefighters Association before retiring in 2001.  Bill was a member of United Methodist Church of Griffith, IN. Bill was a retired member of the Indiana National Guard.

Bill  was a very involved father having three children who were involved in multiple sports and organizations.  He  was a dedicated fan of numerous football, baseball, basketball, soccer and dance team events with his children and grandchildren.  Bill never hesitated to volunteer to coach his kids teams and their friends throughout their childhood. Despite his work schedule, it was not uncommon to see him in the fire rig watching from afar if events fell on a work day.  Bill was a specialist on the fire department being one of the first trained in hazardous materials and confined safety.  He later went on to teach classes to several organizations .  Some of his fondest memories included delivering a baby his first year on the job, overseeing multiple holiday parties and summer picnics, and serving as a delegate to multiple firefighter conferences across the United States. He was thrilled when his oldest son Scott joined the force.  Bill and his wife of 52 years were travelers of the world visiting numerous countries and islands with their favorite friends and family.  He and “The Griswolds'' created wonderful memories including camping trips, cruises and after-game gatherings.  Bill and Joann were known as the dancing champions of their group and often showcased their moves at weddings and celebrations. He had a weakness for chocolate long johns and frequently would surprise his kids and grandkids. One of his favorite weekends of the year was our annual family reunion at Potato Creek Campground.  He loved to exercise by riding his bike.

He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Joann Hoover (Gretz), of 52 years.

Bill is survived by his three children Scott  (Crystal), Ryan (Amy), Shellie (Johnny).
