Vernon Dan Owens of Elwood, Indiana, passed away on May 25, 2025, at the age of 58. Born on April 28, 1967, in Indianapolis, Dan was a graduate of Highland High School in Anderson, Class of 1985.
First and foremost, Dan loved serving his country. He served in the United States military for eight years, an experience that remained close to his heart throughout his life. He had a strong love for his family and friends, and his greatest devotion was to his beloved wife of 27 years, Mary Ellen Owens. He wasn't a dog person—until he met Mary. Together, they shared a home filled with love, laughter, pets, and personality. Dan had a big heart for the people he worked with. He wasn’t just a coworker—he was a friend. Dan’s legacy of love and generosity will continue on—he was an organ donor, a final act of service in keeping with his giving spirit.
He found joy in collecting Hot Wheels, and the last count of the collection was over 1,000 cars—his favorite being the McLaren. He was also an avid video game player and had a knack for turning the house into a welcoming home.
Dan is survived by his loving wife, Mary Ellen Owens; his son, Daniel Leviathan Owens; his half-brother, Jorge Buckner; his mother, Keita Sue Yohe; and his cherished pets, Odin, Timmy, and Dude.
He is preceded in death by his biological father, Richard Dale Buckner; his adopted father, Donald Owens; and his half-sister, Melissa Owens-Obanion.
A Celebration of Life will be held on June 27th, from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM, at the Emery Lee Building, located in Beulah Park, 400 E. 4th St., Alexandria, Indiana 46001.
