Tony Darrell Garrett, 52 of Indianapolis, passed away on Wednesday July 20, 2022, in San Diego, California, surrounded by his family. He was born on October 18, 1969 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Phyllis Garrett.
Tony had a passion for football. Not only was he a diehard Dallas Cowboys fan, he spent over 20 years coaching football, and mentoring kids. He coached them from little league, all the way to high school. His coaching not only left a lasting impression on his own children, but on all who had the opportunity to learn from him. While coaching Tony stayed active by playing flag football and softball.
Tony spent many years as a delivery driver with his last being employed for DHL. Throughout his career he came to know many different people, but none of them stole his heart quite like Dawn did. They have been inseparable for the last 14 years, raising a family, and growing together. They decided to make it official by tying the knot last year in Las Vegas surrounded by friends and family.
Shortly after the wedding, Tony and his family received the devastating news that he had pancreatic cancer. Throughout his journey with cancer, Tony kept his spirits high. He was known for his big smile, loving heart, and humorous personality, and through it all he never lost sight of himself and his love for his family.
Tony is survived by his wife, Dawn; children, Anthony, Kayla, Bryanna, Jordan, and Allen; grandchildren, Luna and Greyson; mother, Phyllis Garrett; four brothers; and host of family members. He is preceded in passing by his father, Jesse Sr.; and brother.
Friends and family are invited to gather on Wednesday August 3, 2022 beginning at 10:00 am at St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church (5325 E 30th Street, Indianapolis, Indiana 46218). Tony’s Homegoing Service will begin at 12:00 pm at the church. A funeral procession to Washington Park North Cemetery will begin immediately following the service.
Face masks will be required in the church.
