Thomas E. Barnes

Thomas Edward Barnes, 93, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away on January 4, 2023.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Lawrence Catholic Church at 46^th and Shadeland, Indianapolis on Saturday, January 7, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be held at St. Lawrence Catholic Church on Saturday, January 7 from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.  Burial will follow the funeral at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens in Fishers, Indiana. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Legacy Funeral Services.

Tom was born in Indianapolis on February 14, 1929. He graduated from Howe High School and attended the University of Notre Dame, Butler University and Indiana Central where he earned his Bachelor and Master’s degrees.

Tom was married to Mary Ellen McShay on May 12, 1956; they were married 66 years.

Tom served in the United States Army and was on active duty in the Korean War.

He was the swimming coach for years at Miramar Swim Club on the eastside of Indianapolis and was a teacher/coach in Indianapolis Public Schools and Lawrence Township Schools.  After retirement from teaching, Tom was a CPA until his retirement at age 92.

Tom is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen; his children, Thomas (Kris), Kathleen Traub (Jeff), Andrew (David), Matthew (Lisa), Christopher (Debbie), and Vincent (Michelle); his numerous grandchildren (Kristyn (Mike), Anthony (Flo), Jacquelyn, Brian (Molly), Erin, Anne (David), Kellie (Alex), Zane (Erin), Stephanie, Meghan, Mary Paige (Tommy), Joseph, Robert, Alexis, Emily, Mary, Elizabeth, and Katherine  and great grandchildren (Leo, Anna, Peter, Conor, Gabriel, Mateo, and Fin).

He was preceded in death by his sons, John and Michael, son-in-law, Keith Tekulve, and grandson, Zachary.
