Stephen Hastings, 71, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away Saturday, September 26, 2026, with his daughter and son-in-law by his side after a nearly decade-long battle with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease.
Steve was a true jack-of-all-trades and held many occupations throughout his life. He worked as a supervisor at the Blaw-Knox Company and Dietrich Industries in Northwest Indiana, had a short stint with K-mart and later became a realtor and house flipper in the 1990s—long before it was a popular trend on HGTV. (A show following his flips would have been a ratings juggernaut.) Most recently, Steve traveled to craft shows selling his wire-wrapped gemstones. When he wasn’t on the road, he proudly served on the St. John Town Council.
A 1973 graduate of Gavit High School in Hammond, Indiana, Steve sang tenor and received the prestigious Airon Award for outstanding achievement in choir. He also received 4 first place medals from District Competition.
Steve went on to earn his associate degree. He later married and welcomed his daughter, Tara. He found love again when he married Casie, with whom he partnered in renovating homes in the Hammond area and selling beautiful gemstones.
In the spring of 2019, Steve moved to Traditions at Solana in Indianapolis. He quickly became a fan favorite during happy hour, singing and helping maintenance with odd jobs around the facility. In August of 2020, despite transitioning to the memory care unit, he fulfilled his proudest goal: walking his daughter down the aisle. Steve spent his last six years in memory care and his last three years on hospice care. Even when words failed him, he would still raise his eyebrows or flash a warm smile at the staff—especially if they had a mini cherry pie.
Steve is survived by his daughter, Tara; son-in-law, Brent; grandchildren, Elisabette “Bette,” Haley, and Asa “Jet”; sister, Melinda; and nieces, Jaime and Savanna.
A celebration of life will be held at Christ the Savior Lutheran Church in Fishers, Indiana on Saturday October 17th. The family will receive visitors from 10-11am with a service at 11am. Burial will be private with final interment at Elmwood Cemetery in Hammond, Indiana.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to CTS music ministry, Joy’s House or Walk to End Alzheimer’s.
