Shirley Anne Young

July 23, 1932 — September 3, 2025

Shirley Anne Young (Study) passed away peacefully on September 3, 2025, at the age of 93 in Carmel, Indiana.

Born on July 23, 1932, in Milroy, Indiana, Shirley was the daughter of Alice and William Study of Richmond, Indiana. She grew up in Richmond and graduated from Richmond High School in 1950.

Shirley went on to study nursing at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis, where she served as president of her class and earned her Registered Nursing license in 1953. She began her nursing career at Reid Memorial Hospital and later worked for Dr. Morris Snyder in Richmond.

In 1958, Shirley moved to Indianapolis and worked at Pitman-Moore (later acquired by Dow Chemical). During her time in the city, she met Joseph (Joe) Benjamin Young III. The two married in June 1960 and settled in Carmel, Indiana, where they raised four daughters.

Shirley was a devoted mother and an active member of St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church in Carmel. Her legacy is one of dedication to family, faith, and community.

After raising her children, Shirley returned to nursing, working in several hospitals and medical facilities in the Indianapolis area. In a testament to her lifelong dedication to learning and service, she earned a Bachelor's degree in Education from Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) in 1991. She retired from nursing in 1998.

Shirley loved traveling, antiquing, reading the Bible, listening to music, cooking, watching movies, playing with pets Whitley, Lucky and Daisy, and—most of all—spending time with family and friends. She spent many Saturdays at the movie theater watching a double feature or at the local thrift store perusing the shelves for the perfect find. She was thrilled to take a trip to Europe, traveling to 11 different countries in 21 days, and to visit with her daughters and granddaughters in Hawaii, Texas, Illinois, and Virginia. Shirley was known for her wit and self-deprecating sense of humor, which often revealed her beautiful smile. Just like her parents, she used adages like “beggars can’t be choosers,” “the early bird gets the worm,” and “actions speak louder than words” when parenting or relating with family and friends.

Shirley is predeceased by her mother Alice G. Study (Johnston), her father William A. Study, her brother William R. Study, her sister Marna E. Anderson (Study), her aunt Francis E. Sherry (Study), her aunt Hazel M. Thorne (Johnston), and her cousin Frederick D. Thorne. She is survived by her daughters: Joan Young of Carmel, Indiana; Karen Schellenberg (Dan) of Round Rock, Texas; Susan Brewster (Frank) of Washington, D.C.; and Marnie Anderson (Chris) of Waikoloa, Hawaii. She is also survived by her former husband, Joseph Benjamin Young III (Cheryl) of Carmel, Indiana; her four grandchildren: Eve Anderson, Kathryn Brewster, Olivia Brewster, and Rose Anderson; her former sister-in-law, Joyce Young of Neptune, New Jersey; cousins Susanne Zuzolo of Richmond, Indiana, and David Lee Thorne of Tucson, Arizona, and nephews Rick Anderson (Carol), Ted Anderson (Rita), Michael Anderson, and Tim Anderson (Jamie), all of the Dayton, Ohio area, and Samuel Study of Palm Bay, Florida.
