Richard James Benjamin, a beloved husband, craftsman, and friend, passed away on November 15, 2025, at the age of 77. Born on January 23, 1948, Richard led a life marked by love, compassion, and an unwavering dedication to his family and faith.
Richard served honorably in the Air National Guard for seven years. After his service, he spent his career at his family business, Kerman Oriental Rug Company, where he repaired exquisite oriental rugs. After he retired from Kerman’s, he still worked on his craft of rug repair and would weave his own style of bookmark rugs to give to friends.
Despite not having children of his own, Richard was blessed with step-grandchildren, Milo and Emily Sparks, who brought joy into his life. His heart was also touched by close relationships with his long-time friend, Terry Miller, whom Richard regarded as the son he never had.
A true neighbor and friend, Richard was affectionately known as “The Wood Man,” admired for his prowess in cutting wood for fire pits and warmth during snowy days. He cherished moments spent taking trips with his brother-in-law, Steve. In his earlier years, he embraced adventure through water and snow skiing.
Richard's warmth extended beyond his personal achievements; he was known for inspiring hope and faith in others, often sharing the message of Jesus and the Kingdom with heartfelt sincerity.
Richard is survived by his devoted wife of 30 years, Pamela, and his long-time best friend, John D. Porter, who was a brother to him.
A Celebration of Life service in Richard's honor will take place on December 5, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at 5215 Shadeland Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46226.
Instead of flowers or donation, Rich would want you to open your heart to Jesus, give your heart to Him and/or think of giving someone a Bible.
