Paul Steve Sams

Paul “Steve” Sams, 68, of Indianapolis, IN, born September 28, 1954, in Cairo, IL, passed away on Sunday, October 23, 2022, at his home surrounded by family.

In 1976, Steve met Cynthia “Cindy” Sams, née Schneider, and they were married in 1978.

Steve attended Northwestern University and Washington University – St. Louis and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and a master’s degree in hospital administration. He worked as Director of Laboratory Services at Barnes Hospital, St. Louis Children’s Hospital, and Missouri Baptist Medical Center. After moving to Indiana in 1992, he served as Vice President of the Central Indiana Regional Blood Center. He later earned a J.D. from Indiana University and went on to become an attorney and administrative law judge.

Steve was a member of several service organizations including serving as a past president of the Belleville Jaycees, a member of Ainad and Murat Shriners, a member of the Sertoma Club, and serving as a Guardian ad Litem. He enjoyed family vacations and traveling to new places.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Cleatus Lorene Schmidt (née Plain), father, Paul Clifford Sams, and son-in-law, Bryan Day.

Surviving are his wife, Cynthia Sams (née Schneider), three daughters, Jackie (Jerred) Sydnor, Andrea Sams, and Krista (John) Brandle, six grandchildren, Delaney Day, Jane Sydnor, Juliet Sydnor, Samuel Day, Rowan Spencer, Levi Brandle, three sisters, Martha (Bob) Ellis, Charlotte (Mark) Knox, Deloris “DJ” (Kevin) Forshee, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Service details:

● Friday, November 4, 2022 (6 pm – 8 pm): Memorial service at Norman Lehr Hall, Melvin Price Memorial Park, 1500 Caseyville Avenue, Swansea, IL 62226

● Saturday, November 5, 2022: St. Henry Catholic Church, 5315 West Main Street, Belleville, IL 62226 – visitation starting at 10 am followed by mass at 11 am with a luncheon to follow
