Michael J. Schaefer, 78, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away on May 14, 2026. Born on December 4, 1947, in Beech Grove, Indiana, Michael was the beloved son of Michael G. and Doris Schaefer.

Michael proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1969 to 1971. Following his military service, he built a respected career through determination, vision, and an unwavering work ethic.

He established Schaefer National Lease and, over the years, successfully founded and operated several businesses. His most recent venture was providing medical transportation services, a role that reflected not only his entrepreneurial spirit but also his deep compassion for others.

While Michael was known as a hardworking businessman, those who knew him best will remember him for his generous heart and genuine kindness. In his younger years, he was an avid golfer who enjoyed spending time on the course with friends. More importantly, he lived his life as an example to his children, teaching them the value of hard work, integrity, generosity, and treating every person with dignity and respect.

Michael's kindness extended far beyond his family. One of his closest friends recalled how Michael once paid for lodging for a client who had nowhere to stay for the night. It was a simple act that spoke volumes about the type of man he was someone who quietly helped others without expecting anything in return. This compassion was woven into the fabric of his life and touched countless people along the way.

Michael was preceded in death by his beloved son, Michael Schaefer; his brother, Steve Schaefer; and his parents, Doris and Michael G.

Schaefer.

He is survived by his life partner, Kim Gerhardt; Mary, the mother of his children; his daughters, Holly (Joseline) and Amanda Martin (Beau); his grandchildren, Michael Emeish, Sophia Emeish, Lucy Ryerson, August Martin, Nataly Schaefer, and Troy Schaefer; and his siblings, Patrick Schaefer, Susan Schaefer McClain, Kevin Schaefer, and Rebecca Schaefer Arnold.

Michael's legacy lives on through the family he loved, the businesses he built, the lessons he taught, and the countless lives he touched through his kindness and generosity. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who have the privilege of knowing him.

May his memory be a blessing and an inspiration to all whose lives he enriched.
