Michael J. Schaefer, of Carmel, Indiana, passed away on May 14, 2026. He was born on December 4, 1947, in Beech Grove, Indiana, to Michael G. and Doris M. Schaefer.
Shortly after graduating from Cathedral High School, Mike proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1969 to 1971. Following his military service, he built a respected career through determination, vision, and an unwavering work ethic.
Mike founded Schaefer National Leasing and, over the years, successfully established and operated several businesses. His most recent venture was providing medical transportation services, a role that reflected not only his entrepreneurial spirit but also his deep compassion for others.
While Mike was known as a hardworking businessman, those who knew him best will remember him for his generous heart and genuine kindness. In his younger years, he was an avid golfer who enjoyed spending time on the course with friends. More importantly, he lived his life as an example to his children, teaching them the values of hard work, integrity, generosity, and treating every person with dignity and respect.
Mike’s kindness extended far beyond his family. One close friend recalled how Mike once paid for lodging for a client who had nowhere to stay for the night. It was a simple act that spoke volumes about the kind of man he was—someone who quietly helped others without expecting anything in return. This compassion was woven into the fabric of his life and touched countless people along the way.
Mike was preceded in death by his beloved son, Michael Schaefer; his brother, Steven J Schaefer; and his parents, Doris M. and Michael G. Schaefer. He is survived by his wife, Mary; his daughters, Holly Schaefer (Joseline) and Amanda Martin (Beau); six cherished grandchildren; and his siblings, Patrick Schaefer, Rebecca Arnold, Kevin Schaefer, and Susan McClain.
Mike’s legacy lives on through the family he loved, the businesses he built, the lessons he taught, and the countless lives he touched through his kindness and generosity. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
In honoring Mike’s memory, his family encourages those who knew him to carry forward the compassion, generosity, and integrity that defined his life. There could be no greater tribute to a man who never hesitated to help someone in need.
