Michael “Mike” Andrew Cordell, 76, of Lawrence, Indiana, passed away peacefully and went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, while surrounded by his family on Saturday, April 11, 2026.
He was born on December 6, 1949, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to the late Eugene Richard Cordell and Nelda June (Millikan) Cordell.
Mike received his early education at School 38 and Calvary Christian School and graduated from Warren Central High School in 1969. During his school years, he was actively involved in the Boy Scouts and the marching band. He also took part in Naval Electronics Explorer Posts, where he developed a strong and lasting interest in science and technology.
He continued his education at Purdue University, where he was a member of the university’s marching band, and later pursued studies in electrical engineering, calculus, and computer programming at Indiana University–Indianapolis. Mike had a lifelong passion for technology and worked as a computer programmer, taking immense pride in building and working on computers.
In addition, he took part in Television Production Explorer Posts, where he gained valuable hands-on experience, mentorship, and insight into the field of broadcasting.
Mike dedicated many years to his professional career, holding positions with H.P. Wasson & Co., Western Electric, AT&T, Comcast, and Time Warner. He concluded his career with Bright House Networks, where he faithfully served for 22 years before retiring in 2016.
Outside of his professional life, Mike enjoyed gardening and electronics, especially amateur (Ham) radio. He achieved Extra Class licensure and held the call sign KD9GSZ. He greatly enjoyed connecting with others over the air and was proficient in Morse code. In his later years, he found joy in caring for his parakeet and feeding neighborhood squirrels.
Mike will be remembered for his quiet kindness, steadfast faith, and gentle spirit. A devoted follower of Jesus Christ, he lived his life with humility, compassion, and a deep trust in the Lord. His faith was a guiding light in his life, reflected in the way he loved his family, served others, and remained grounded through all seasons of life.
Mike leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and devotion. His family finds comfort in knowing he has been welcomed into eternal peace and is now in the presence of his Savior.
In addition to his parents, Mike was preceded in death by his sister, Donna Lynne (Cordell) Lawrence; his companion, Lois Ann Combs; and his former wife, Patricia Ann (Johnson) Screen.
He is survived by his children, Chris Cordell (Sheri) and Emily Featherston (Ryan); his stepson, Tim Smith (Donna); and four step-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings, Cindy Eason (Byron) and Mark Cordell, along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Mike also cared deeply for his companion’s son, Robert “Bobby” Combs. He cherished time spent with his family and friends and loved being in their presence.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 16, from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Legacy Cremation & Funeral Services – Lawrence, 5215 N. Shadeland Avenue, Lawrence, Indiana. An Additional Visitation will take place on Friday, April 17, from 11:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., followed by a Funeral Service at 12:00 p.m. at Calvary Tabernacle Church, 902 Fletcher Avenue, Indianapolis, Indiana. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery at 2:30 p.m., with a brief benediction and committal.
Mike began attending Calvary Tabernacle with his father in 1957. In honor of Mike, his family requests contributions be made to Calvary Tabernacle, 902 Fletcher Avenue, Indianapolis, Indiana 46203.
