Matthew Jared Schomer

October 4, 1983 — November 28, 2023

Matthew Jared Schomer, 40, passed away on November 28, 2023, in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was born October 4, 1983, in Defiance, Ohio. During Matt’s third-grade parent teacher conference, his teacher explained that they had 31 students in the class and that the other 30 students all had a friend named “Matt”. Matt’s ability to connect with people was his gift, and that’s what made him the person we will all remember.  Matt later played middle school and high school football which he loved, from the Colt’s Jr. team all the way through the Northville Mustangs Varsity team. During his senior year of football, Matt won the Ironman trophy, an award which he was very proud of.  Matt graduated from Northville High School in 2002.

Later, Matt moved to Evansville, Indiana, and completed his bachelor’s degree in business administration at the University of Southern Indiana. He worked at the Aztar Casino Hotel in downtown Evansville during this time.  It didn’t matter whether an individual was on the maintenance crew or the Chairman of the Board of a company in town that week for a seminar, odds are they knew Matt, and he knew them, and they both had a friend to rely on, that’s just who he was.

Shortly after completing his business degree, Matt moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, in 2011, a city which he dearly loved.  He lived in the heart of the 4th ward, uptown Charlotte area with his brother.  At this time, Matt got into the mortgage and banking industry, which was a memorable and happy time for Matt.

After three years in Charlotte, he continued his career in the mortgage and lending industry in Indianapolis, Indiana. He always knew it was better to pick up the phone and make a personal connection, even in a time when this was going out of style.  He naturally knew how to leave a memorable personal impression.  In a time when work from home, text messaging, and email can take humanity out of work.  Matt still knew to pick up the phone in order to connect with people. Making real connections leaves the best impressions, and we all can learn a little something about being a better person from Matt.

Matt enjoyed fishing, and he experienced a very memorable trip to Alaska which he took in 2011.  It was always fun to go fishing with Matt.  Something he shared with younger generations. He enjoyed playing cards with friends, playing guitar, live music, and football games on tv.  He was an excellent cook and had recently adopted a tuxedo cat named Raven.

He was a son, a brother, an uncle, a godfather, and partner.  Matt is survived by his parents, Richard & Karen Schomer; his brother, Nick (Morgan) Schomer; his nephew, Alex Schomer; and his niece, Samantha Schomer. He is also survived by his sister, Valerie (Kevin) Fenech; his nieces, Cali and Skylar Fenech; and his very special significant other, Tricia Jones.
