Mary Joyce Smith

Some people only walk this earth for a short time. Their departure reminds us that angels are watching over us. On November 28, 2022, Mary Joyce Smith got her wings and went to walk with the angels. Mary rejoined her heavenly family. Mary passed away at the age of 76. Mary was the biological mother of three children. However, many people considered Mary their surrogate mother.

  By the standards of any era, Mary was an exceptional wife and mother. She cared deeply for her family and neighbors. She did this not out of obligation, but because of who she was. She was always the first to offer help. She regularly prayed for and with anyone in need. And she always ensured that every child who crossed her threshold was safe, healthy, and happy. Mary was a compassionate spirit whose passion was caring for others. She worked as a nurse prior to being disabled and volunteered her time and skills to anyone she knew in need. Also volunteering at her church as a greeter and at the coffee bar. She was a true follower of Christ in that she had many works to show his love. 

Mary is survived by her daughters Arbana Atkinson and Freedom Smith, her son Jesse Smith Jr, and her grandchildren Anthony Atkinson, Arthur Church, and Arbana Church along with great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Jesse Smith Sr.

Memorial services will be held December 9, 2022, at People’s Church in Indianapolis, 7960 Castleway Dr, Indianapolis, IN 46250 visitation 2pm- 4:30pm service at 5:00pm.
