Martha Jane Meadows Coates, 96, of Greenwood, Indiana, passed away on July 17, 2026. Born October 21, 1929, in Woodman, Kentucky, she was a woman of deep faith, quiet strength, and devoted service to her family, community, and God. 

A graduate of Virginia Business College, Martha served with distinction in the U.S. Government Civil Service as secretary to senior military officials, completing a career of more than two decades before retiring at 62.

She married Paul Edward Coates on February 2, 1949, and together they shared over 65 years of marriage and ministry. As the wife of a Baptist minister for more than 50 years, she supported his calling with grace and steadfast dedication, especially through her work in the Missions Society.

A lifelong lover of books and learning, Martha volunteered at her local library and shared her passion for reading with others. Her quiet generosity and commitment to service touched many lives.

Martha is survived by her children Melissa (Robert) Higginbotham, Mark (Natalie Chambers) Coates, and Matthew (Cira) Coates; grandchildren Alicia, Paul (Hillery), and Amanda (Michael); and great-grandmother to Cora, Ella, and Lynn. She was preceded in death by her husband Paul (2015), granddaughter Lauren (2015), and all of her siblings.

Martha lived a life of purpose, principle, and love. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered. 

Visitation and service to be held on Sunday, August 2nd at Legacy Cremation & Funeral Services, 1604 W. Morris St., Indianapolis, IN. Visitation at 2:00 pm followed by a brief Memorial Service at 3:00pm. 

Please dress comfortably in bright colors in honor of Martha’s wishes. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the charity of your choice.
