Marilyn Ann Campbell, 83, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away on June 13, 2024, while surrounded by family.
Marilyn was born in Clinton, Indiana on May 30, 1941, to Owen and Esther Campbell, and grew up in Dana, Indiana with her brother Donald Campbell. She graduated from Dana High School in 1958 before marrying Glen Steele and having three children: Mary Catherine (Cathy), Susan, and John.
Marilyn earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Saint Joseph’s College, in Rensselaer, Indiana, and a master’s degree in elementary education from Indiana State University, in Terre Haute, Indiana. She taught fourth grade in Rensselaer, Indiana for several years before moving to Kokomo, Indiana where she continued her teaching career.
After divorcing in 1977 she raised her children as a single mother. She instilled in her children independence and a lifelong love of learning.
In 1986 Marilyn married Jack Campbell, Sr., of Culver, Indiana. The following year she retired from teaching. Marilyn and Jack enjoyed many summers living in Culver on the shores of Lake Maxinkuckee. They wintered in Clewiston, Florida where they fished in Lake Okeechobee. After Jack’s death, Marilyn moved to Indianapolis, Indiana.
Marilyn was passionate about music. She was an accomplished pianist who enjoyed playing both classical and popular music. She also enjoyed attending concerts whenever possible.
Marilyn loved to travel and explore new areas of the country. She enjoyed taking automotive road trips and cruises, seeing the scenery, touring historic houses, and taking steam-powered railroad excursions. Strong and independent, she would often travel alone.
Marilyn was also an avid reader and always had a good book close at hand. She was a devoted supporter of her local library system and volunteered at the Lawrence branch of the Indianapolis Public Library for several years. Her other interests included sewing, embroidery, “playing” on her computer, eating out with family and friends, watching Jeopardy! (and shouting out the questions), and watching British dramas on her local PBS station.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Jack Campbell, Sr.
She is survived by her children Cathy Shockney, Susan Steele, and John Steele; by her brother Donald Campbell; by her stepchildren David Campbell, Jack Campbell, Jr., and Susan Thews; and by numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
To honor our mother's wishes, there will be no funeral or memorial service. We invite you to privately celebrate Marilyn’s memory in your own way. We know that she will be with us all in spirit.
