Kathleen Frances Cookman, born on January 10, 1932, in Anderson, Indiana, passed away peacefully on September 28, 2024 at the age of 92, in her hometown. A lifelong resident of Anderson, Kathleen leaves behind a legacy of love, service and unwavering faith that will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Kathleen dedicated a significant portion of her life to serving in her beloved Central Christian Church, where she was a devoted member from childhood through her final days. Her commitment to the church was evident in her active participation in its many programs. She held leadership positions including CWF President, deacon, and Elder Emeritus. Additionally, Kathleen served as the church librarian and was a cherished member of the church choir, always ready to lend her voice in worship. Her culinary talents shone during her years as the camp cook, ensuring that fellow congregants enjoyed warm meals and fellowship. Alongside her late husband, she participated in Disciples of Christ Work Projects, exemplifying her dedication to community service.
In her professional life, Kathleen wielded her teaching degree from Ball State University to inspire young minds. Although she taught for a short time, her most treasured role was that of a wife and mother. Kathleen’s nurturing spirit extended beyond her immediate family; she became a second mom to many, offering kindness, support, and understanding to all who crossed her path.
With a personality that could be described as easy-going yet feisty, Kathleen was never one to shy away from voicing her opinions. She maintained a positive outlook on life and was cherished for her non-critical approach to those around her. Kathleen also had a deep appreciation for equal rights, remaining active in the American Association of Women for several years.
Kathleen's love for sports, particularly the Chicago Cubs, made her an enthusiastic spectator of games. She found joy in watching competitive sports, immersing herself in the excitement and camaraderie they brought. Her intellectual curiosity was evident in her passion for puzzles and trivia, particularly enjoyed while watching Jeopardy. Kathleen thrived on being busy, filling her time with activities that kept her engaged and enriched her life.
Kathleen Frances Cookman’s remarkable life touched countless hearts through her devotion to family, faith, and community. She will be dearly missed but fondly remembered by all whose lives were enhanced by her presence. A special thank you to Bethany Point for their care this last month and to a special caretaker Ryan.
Kathleen is survived by her children Harold Cookman (Debbie), Clifford R. Cookman (Helen), Sarah Cookman, and Paul Cookman; grandchildren Melissa Cookman, Tiffany Cookman, Casi Cummins (Jason), Jessica Smith (Brandon), Jennilee Cookman (Braden Kirkpatrick), and Clifford J. Cookman; great-grandchildren Aundrea and Eli Smith, Jack and Jagger Cummins, and William and Harrison Cookman; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
She is preceded in death by her husband Donald L. Cookman, whom she married on March 13, 1953; parents Samuel and Harriett Forkner; siblings Richard Forkner (Jeanne), David Forkner (Mariwanda), Martha Jane Burk (Philip); infant son; and special daughter Terry Bratton.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday October 8, 2024, from 11-1pm at Central Christian Church, 923 Jackson St. Anderson, IN 46016, with a funeral service beginning at 1pm. Burial will take place at Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery. In honor of Kathleen, the family asks that those in attendance chose to wear something red to the funeral in her memory as it was her favorite color.
