Judith Elen Overturf

August 30, 1945 — September 29, 2025

Indianapolis

Judith (Judy) Elen Overturf passed away peacefully in Indianapolis, Indiana on September 29, 2025. Judy was born to Frederick (Fred) and Imogene (Genie) Madorin on August 30, 1945. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 50 years, Wayne E. Overturf, and her sister Freddie Jean Williams.

Judy grew up an “oil brat” moving every few years as her father was a Mobil Oil Executive, but she finally found her home at Purdue University where she thrived inside and outside of the classroom and in her social life. She was City Editor of the Exponent, Gold Pepper Honor Society for top leaders in sorority life, and an Alpha Chi Omega, where she learned and passed along the songs of every Greek house on campus to her children. She graduated from Purdue University in 1967 and began her love of travel by playing her guitar all over Europe before settling into a sales merchandising career as a buyer for William H. Block Co.

In 1969, she married Wayne E. Overturf and they traveled and lived together as newlyweds in Germany where they were stationed after Vietnam. After her experience of military base living, Judy felt empowered to attend Indiana University School of Law to make sure she had the knowledge and tools to advocate for others. As a trailblazing woman and an attorney for almost 40 years, Judy used her legal talents to benefit many organizations by lending her time and legal expertise including Child Advocates, Holy Cross Lutheran Church where she was a member for nearly 30 years, a Stephen Minister, part of the Comfort Dog Ministry and part of the Voter’s Representative Board and Foundation. Judy was also a Master Level Certified Hazardous Manager and a Board Member of the Indiana Forum for Environmental Safety.

Wayne and Judy were both travel warriors with a serious case of Wanderlust and managed to visit all 50 states, over 40 countries and all seven continents, checking off nearly every bucket list country before Wayne passed away in 2019. Wayne and Judy instilled this love of travel in their children along with their fierce faith and commitment to their Church family. After her retirement, Judy spent many years with her “Mermaid” friends swimming and lunching after the YMCA and volunteering her time at the Sharing Place among other charitable pursuits. She was also an insatiable reader.

Judy’s children were the true passion in her life to inspire and motivate to success; she is survived by her children, Justine Overturf Singh (Regg), Whitney E. Overturf (Justin); and Weston Erick (Wes) Overturf (Amy); and many nieces and nephews. Judy is also survived by her grandchildren, Ryker, Mathis, Trinity (TES), Ainsley, Halleigh, Brody, Reese and Hannah to which she was affectionally known as Gamma.

A private celebration of life for Judy’s family will be at Washington Park North, in Indianapolis. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in Judy’s memory may be made to Holy Cross Lutheran Church.
