Obituary for James Sanders: 11/25/1965 – 5/15/2026
James Sanders, 60 years old, of Indianapolis/Peru, Indiana, passed away on May 15th, 2026 at his home in Vincennes, Indiana with his family by his side.
He was born on November 25th, 1965, in Frankfort, Germany, to Carolyn Pervis-Ogan & James (Rabbit) Sanders. He grew up in Peru, Indiana, and attended Peru High School. James demonstrated resilience and strength throughout his childhood, navigating many hardships, and overcoming significant tragedy.
James Sanders worked in a variety of maintenance roles throughout his career and proudly earned his HVAC certification. He was known for his strong work ethic, dedication to his craft, and the genuine care he showed each customer, treating others like family in every job he took on. James had a deep passion for fishing, riding motorcycles, shooting firearms, skydiving, music, attending concerts, collecting unique items, and spending meaningful time with family and friends. He embraced life fully and found joy in adventure, connection, and making memories with those he loved. Above all, James will be remembered for his selflessness and generosity. He was the kind of person who would give the shirt off his back to help someone in need and often stepped into the role of mentor and father figure for children and others around him. His kindness, loyalty, and willingness to show up for people left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him. James was also known for his eccentric and unfiltered sense of humor, bringing laughter wherever he went. Unapologetically himself, he lived authentically and left behind countless stories, smiles, and memories that will never be forgotten.
He is survived by Carolyn Ogan (mother), Karen Ponton (spouse of 22 years), Austin Overley (son), Dawn Sanders (daughter), Dakota Sanders (son), Derek/Lindsey Ponton (son & daughter in-law), Ryan Ponton (son), Kelly Smith (sister), Trina Sowers (sister), Pete Sanders (brother), Stephanie Cronin (sister), Jennifer Cronin (sister), and Janice Cronin (sister), Lucy Ponton (granddaughter), Harrison Ponton (grandson), and Cooper Burke (grandson). He was preceded in death by James Sanders (father) and Paul Sanders (brother).
Visitation will be held on May 20th from 1:00 to 4:30pm at Legacy Cremation and Funeral Service to start at 4:30pm to 5:00pm ~ located at 1604 W Morris Street, Indianapolis, IN 46221.
