James Deo Carter, born on November 26, 1950, in Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away in his hometown on May 24, 2025, after a short illness. James was a proud graduate of Arlington High School and devoted a significant part of his career to the Indianapolis newspapers. He will be remembered for his contributions to his community through various local organizations, including the Shriners, Freemasons, Scottish Rite, and Flying Fezzes.
He had a love for reading, history, and a natural talent for crossword and sudoku puzzles.
Family was at the core of James's life. He deeply loved his family and delighted in the gatherings at family reunions, where laughter and memories were always in abundance. His commitment to his loved ones was unwavering, and he took immense pride in his sobriety of 29 years.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Janet Nicewanger Carter; stepdaughters, Andrea Link and Amy Parker; sisters, Cathy Carter Carroll (Bob), Pam Carter McLaughlin (Joe), and Susan Carter Bales; nieces, Kimberly Carroll Lane (Mike), Kristy Carroll, Megan Carroll Emmanuel (Matt), Madison McLaughlin, Cassandra Bales; nephew, Derron Carter Bales (Tracey); and Tiffany Miller McCoy (Aaron); and several great nieces and nephews who will forever cherish his memory. He was preceded in death by his parents.
To honor his wishes, no service will be held. In lieu of flowers, his family kindly requests a donation in his memory to the Shriners Children’s Hospital: Care of Murat Shriners: 510 N. New Jersey Street, Indianapolis, IN 46204.
