Gerald Humphries

May 8, 1952 — October 17, 2025

With heartfelt love and gratitude for a life well-lived, we celebrate the life of Gerald “Jerry” E. Humphries, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, who passed away on October 17, 2025.

Born on May 8, 1952, Jerry lived a life marked by faith, service, strength, and unwavering love. He served in the U.S. Navy before dedicating himself to his community as a Firefighter and Fire Chief from 1971 to 1984.

Following his firefighting career, Jerry continued his journey of commitment and excellence as a Fleet Manager for 31 years. No matter the role, Jerry brought his signature work ethic, integrity, and generosity of spirit.

A man of deep faith, Jerry lived by example—showing what it meant to put others first. He openly shared his love for the Lord through leading Bible studies, singing at local coffee houses, and in open mic nights. Known for his distinctive bass voice, Jerry brought warmth and meaning to every song he sang, touching hearts and lifting spirits with every vocal testimony.

His love knew no bounds, especially for his family, who remained the center of his world.

He is survived by his loving wife, Rita Mayes Humphries; daughters Michelle (Keith) Nuckols, Jennifer (Jason) Ford, and Christy (Trevor) Smith, Robert (Vanessa Collett) Solloway, Jennifer Thomas, and his three siblings: Joe (Joann) Humphries, Kenny Humphries, and Ruth (Barry) Durbin.

He was a cherished grandfather to Hayley (Gareth) Votor, Heather Hayden (Spencer Heyne), Sequoia Nuckols, Sierra Humphries, Marijah Weaver, Tahja Penn, Isiah Ford, Melody Thomas, Olivia Smith, Elijah Ford, and Charles Smith. He was also blessed with great-grandchildren: Braedon, Kayleigh, Gabriel, Zy’Aire, and Zy’Riah (in the womb), each of whom brought him immense joy and pride.

He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Franklin Humphries Sr.; beloved mother, Alice Irene Keihl Wolfe; his sisters Barbara Johnson, Cathy Olave, and Jo Carolyn Koenig; his precious daughter, Melisa April Hernandez; and his great-grandson, Roman.

There will be a visitation from 5pm to 8pm on Wednesday, October 22, 2025 at Legacy Cremation & Funeral Services, 5215 N. Shadeland Avenue, Indianapolis, IN to celebrate Jerry's life.
