George Fred Altes Jr.

July 2, 1937 — July 8, 2022

Carmel, Indiana

George Fred Altes, 85 of Carmel, passed away on Friday July 8th 2022. He was born on July 2nd, 1937 in Indianapolis to the late George and Alice Altes. George served in the National Guard. He worked for IPS as a Maintenance Supervisor for 27 years. He was a devoted husband and loving father of six. He was married to the love of his life, Myrlene Altes, for nearly 65 years. One of his most profound legacies was introducing Myrlene to Christianity and serving their God together; little did he know at the time that that religious influence would become the foundation for raising his children and his children’s’ children. His greatest joy in life was his family. He was the constant pillar of stability, but also the comedic relief everyone needed. Whether it be chasing the grandkids around his home with his false teeth in, or telling one of his infamous jokes; the house was always full of laughter and love. When he wasn’t playing practical jokes on someone (usually Myrlene) then you could find him on the porch wearing his IU winter hat, people watching and enjoying a cup coffee until 7 PM when Jeopardy came on. He was a man of little words, but he had an enormous heart. He selflessly opened up his home to all his family without question or hesitation. He liked to play the role of the grumpy old man, but honestly even he couldn’t withhold a smile when he received a call from family. Before he passed, he repented to God in hopes of rejoining his beloved Myrlene in the Promise Land.

George is survived by; his older brother, Robert Altes; loving daughters, Rebecca Gaied, Debra Haynes, and Janice Altes; son, James Altes,; grandchildren, Stacey Eaton, Joshua Eaton, Joseph Powell, Aja Powell, Latasha Powell, Melissa Gray, Peggy Altes, James Altes, Angelia Altes, George Altes, David Haynes, Danielle Haynes, Tommy Woods Jr., and Ashley Kirchner; great-grandchildren, Hazel Powell, William Peterson, Elizabeth Gray, Thomas Gray, Raelyn Altes, Kayne Galan, Lillian Galan, Jericho Galan, Isaiah Woods, Jaxson Woods, Maverick Woods,  Ava Roucoulet, Dominic Ross, Arlo Haynes, Kailia Haynes. He is preceded in passing by his parents, George and Alice Altes; brothers, Elmer Altes, Charlie Altes, Frank Altes, Edwin Altes; sisters, Hazel Altes Carson, Alice Altes Cheek; wife, Myrlene Altes; daughter, Peggy Sue Altes; son, Paul Altes and grandson, James Powell.

The viewing will be held on Tuesday July 19, 2022, at Legacy Funeral Services (5215 Shadeland Ave.) at 11am to 1pm and the service will begin at 1pm at the funeral home.
