Floyd Duane
Swinford
January 21, 1941 – April 6, 2026
Floyd Duane Swinford entered his Heavenly home on April 6, 2026, following a brief illness.
Born in Middletown, Indiana, on January 21, 1941, to Art and Irma Swinford, Floyd was a lifelong Middletown/Muncie resident, except for a few years spent in Ozark, AL and during his time in the U.S. Army. He often spoke of his military service as a highlight of his life, noting that he had the opportunity to see much of Europe while completing his three-year tour.
A modern-day “cowboy,” Floyd loved dogs and horses—especially his standard Australian Shepherd, “Hank”, and his King Ranch mare, “Gypsy”. He spent several years team roping and much of his life sharing horsemanship tips and tricks with others. He loved western novels and movies, with Lonesome Dove among his favorites. Like the character “Deets” from that epic western, he could be described in the following way: “Cheerful in all weathers, never shirked a task, splendid behavior.”
Floyd’s other hobbies included golf, bowling, attending flower and livestock auctions, and traveling the back roads whenever possible.
Floyd had a strong faith in Jesus, coming to know Him in 1993. His frequent, simple, but profound prayer of, “Dear Lord, thank you for everything we have and for everything we’ll ever have. Amen.”, served as a reminder of his gratitude for the goodness of God in his life. Over the years, he was an active member of several churches, most recently Glad Tidings of Muncie.
Upon retiring from Delco Remy, Floyd worked for several years as a driver for PA Labs.
Floyd was preceded in death by his parents; his two sisters; the light of his life, his wife of 20 years, Judie; and his beloved daughter, Amy.
He is survived by his stepdaughters, Jerrie Bellish and Julie Coffey; grandchildren Holly, Chelsea, Daniel, Emily, Joseph, Olivia, and Sarah; several great-grandchildren; cousins; and his nephew, Ronnie Rickart. He is also survived by special friends Mike and Linda Brotherton, ex-wife, Brenda Swinford, and David and Lori Hobbs. Also left to cherish the memory of their “Pops” are Marlee Hobbs and Harris Hobbs.
Floyd will be deeply missed and fondly remembered for his quick wit, easy smile, and generous spirit by all who knew him.
A Celebration of Life for family and friends to stop in and share happy memories of Floyd will be held at Middletown United Methodist Church, located at 625 High Street, Middletown, Indiana, 47356, on May 30 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Honor Guard and Presentation of Colors will take place at 11:15.
