Della Mae Nicks, 81, of Indianapolis, Indiana, peacefully entered eternal rest on July 5, 2026.
Born on December 21, 1944 in Forest, Mississippi, Della was the beloved daughter of Martha and Matthew Nicks. She later made Indianapolis, Indiana her home, where sh built a life centered on faith, family, hard work, and unconditional love.
Della dedicated 24 years of service to Sears Outlet in customer service. She was known for her warm smile, caring nature, and strong work ethic.
Family was the center of Della’s world. She was a devoted mother to Marvin Nicks, Michael Nicks, Mark Slaughter, and Marcy Sizemore, and a loving mother-in-law to Aukisha Nicks. She was a proud grandmother to Sophia, Anthony, Kanay, and Ja’Niyah, and an adoring great-grandmother to Mikel, My’Kaila, Kenyelle, and Summer. She also leaves behind a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever cherish her memory.
Della was preceded in death by her parents Martha and Matthew Nicks, and her siblings Matthew, Bill, Ben, David, and Josephine. She leaves to cherish her memory her sisters Martha, Annie, Rosemary and Gloria.
Anyone who knew Della knew she loved sports. She never missed an Indianapolis Colts football game and always wanted to know when the Indiana Pacers or the Indiana Fever were playing. She especially enjoyed talking sports with her son, Mark, and could hold her own in any conversation about the game.
One of Della’s favorite places was her front porch. She loved sitting outside and watching her grandchildren play and enjoying simple moments of life. Every Friday she looked forward to calling her grandson Anthony on his day off, eager to hear stories about her great-granddaughter Summer, whose adventures always brought a smile to her face.
Every evening Della sat on the porch waiting for Michael to come home from work. If he was running late, she didn’t hesitate to call because she wanted to make sure he made it home safely. She spoke with Marcy every day, making sure to ask about each grandchild, one by one. Sundays were reserved for Marvin and Aukisha. She would call asking, “Where’s my food?” and then happily wait on the porch for her Sunday meal to arrive.
Della was known for speaking her mind. Whether it made you laugh or blush, she always told people exactly what she thought. Family friends always joked, “Your mom is a trip!”, because of her honesty, humor, and unforgettable personality. She loved her children fiercely, stood by the through every challenge, and celebrated every victory. Her love was constant, her advice was genuine, and her presence was a blessing to everyone fortunate enough to know her.
Though our hearts are heavy with loss, we find comfort knowing that the love, laughter, wisdom, and countless memories Della shared will continue to live through her family and all whose lives she touched.
“Well done, good and faithful servant”
“Her life was a blessing, her memory a treasure. She is loved beyond words and missed beyond measure”
