Clara Mae (Whitney) Smith

Clara Mae (Whitney) Smith, 89, of Indianapolis, IN, passed away on April 7, 2023.  She was born on July 8, 1933, in Westmoreland, TN to the late Delbert H. and Virgie (Hopkins) Whitney.  Clara graduated from Washington High School (on Indianapolis’ westside).  She worked in the accounts payable departments at IPS and Riley Industries.  Clara was a member of Bible Study Chapel.

Clara loved gardening, crocheting and knitting, and had beautiful penmanship.  She was a fantastic cake decorator, who wowed people with her wedding cakes, all the way down to 1st birthday cakes.  She was even known to get creative with a bachelorette cake every now and again.  Clara always had a smile on her face and was willing to help anyone who needed it.  You couldn’t leave Clara’s house without a bag full of something, that she would lovingly send home with you.

She is preceded in death by her parents, mentioned above; son-in-law, Daniel Caruthers; great grandson, Waylon Caruthers; and brothers, James Lester Whitney, Virgil Whitney, Tom Whitney, and Delbert Whitney, Jr.

Clara is survived by her sister, Virginia (Kenneth) McDole of Clayton, IN; son, Kevin (Diane) Smith of Pendleton, IN; daughter, Karen Caruthers of Lawrence, IN; grandchildren, Ryan (Kristine) Smith of Fishers, IN, Eric Smith of Pendleton, IN, Daniel (Tara) Caruthers of Knightstown, IN, and Jessica (Julian) Perry of Greenwood, IN; and great grandchildren, Aleister Perry, Lorelei Perry, and Wyatt Caruthers.

Clara’s final wishes was to be cremated.  The family will hold a memorial service, which will be announced at a later date. Arrangements provided by Legacy Cremation & Funeral Services – Lawrence.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the church: Bible Study Chapel, 2368 N. Spencer Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46218.
