Clara E. Landers-Lowery

July 8, 1937 — August 29, 2025

Clara E. Landers-Lowery, a beloved mother, grandmother, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully at her home in Indianapolis, Indiana, on August 29, 2025. She was born on July 8, 1937, in Cowden, Illinois, and lived a life that exemplified her strength and resilience.

Clara dedicated her career to the culinary arts, having worked as a cook at various establishments throughout her life. She ultimately retired from Smith & Dale's Bar and Grill, where her culinary talents were well appreciated. Known for her extraordinary cooking skills, she had a special knack for creating delicious meals that brought family and friends together. Among her many culinary achievements, her Swiss steak was a particular favorite, repeatedly requested at family gatherings and cookouts, which were always filled with laughter and love.

In addition to her culinary endeavors, Clara had an adventurous spirit. She loved bargaining for treasures at yard sales, where she would often discover unique finds that brought joy to her family. Her creative side shined through in her arts and crafts, as she spent many joyful hours painting, decorating ceramics, and fabric painting to make delightful decorative pillows alongside her children and grandchildren.

Clara's legacy continues through her loving family: her son, Samuel Jr.; daughters Cathy Ausmus, Sandy McCleery, and Michelle (James) Bays; along with fourteen grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, and several great-great-grandchildren who will carry her memory forward. Additionally, she will be missed by her fur babies, Lil Girl and KC.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Edna Landers; her brothers, David and Joe Landers; her son, James E. Ausmus; her daughter, Lucinda Hibbard; and her grandson, Kristopher Hutchins and her granddaughter, Dusti Hutchins. Their memories live on in the hearts of those she leaves behind.

Legacy Cremation & Funeral Services of Indianapolis are handling the arrangements for Clara Landers-Lowery. Her cremated remains will be buried alongside her grandson, Kris. The family plans on having a celebration of life for Clara at a later date.

As family and friends reflect on Clara's life, they remember her as a resilient woman, whose love, laughter, and incredible culinary creations brought warmth and joy to all who knew her. She will be deeply missed but fondly remembered.
