Today, we gather to celebrate the life of a truly special woman, Carol Sue Burchfield, but better known to her family and friends as "Sue," someone who meant so much to so many people and whose presence touched the hearts of everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
People often say that money is what makes you rich. But I think she showed us what being truly rich really means. Being rich isn’t about how much money you have in the bank or how many things you own. Sue was rich because she got to live long enough to watch her children Donald & his wife Angie & grandchildren DJ, Holly, Michael Dylan grow, to see them become amazing people, and to be surrounded by the love of her family.
That is a kind of wealth that money could never buy.
Sue was the kind of woman who, if she needed something done, she would find a way to get it done. And if someone told her “No,” well… they probably should have known better. Because “no” was not exactly a word she was willing to accept. She was determined, strong-willed, and independent—and when she had her mind set on something, you could either get on board or get out of the way.
And then, of course, there was her love of the casino and playing cards.
Sue may not have always walked into the casino with a winning hand, but she sure knew how to have a good time trying. And I think we can all agree that if there was a card table nearby, she was probably going to find it. She had a little bit of a competitive side—and maybe she believed that eventually the cards were going to realize who they were dealing with and start cooperating.
But that's part of what made her so special. Sue knew how to enjoy life. She knew how to have fun. She knew how to make memories.
She lived a full and beautiful life—not because it was perfect, but because it was filled with the things that truly matter family, love, laughter, memories, and the people she cared about.
Sue leaves behind more than memories. She leaves behind pieces of herself in every person she loved. Her strength, her determination, her humor, her stories, and the lessons she taught her family will continue to live on through the generations.
There will be moments when we miss her more than words can explain. Holidays will feel different. Family gatherings will feel different. There will be moments when someone tells a story about her and, for just a second, it may hurt because we wish she were still here to hear it.
But I hope that, with time, those tears will become smiles.
Because she gave us so many reasons to smile.
Sue was a special person who found a permanent place in the hearts of the people who knew and loved her. And although we have to say goodbye to her physical presence, the love she gave her family will never leave.
She was loved. She was appreciated. She was surrounded by family. She got to see her children and grandchildren grow into amazing people.
And in the end, I think that's what a rich life truly looks like.
So today, we don't just mourn the loss of an incredible woman. We celebrate her life, her strength, her laughter, her stubbornness, her love of cards and the casino, and most importantly, the love she gave to her family.
Sue is survived by her son, Donald Hicks, his wife, Angie, and their children: DJ, Holly, Michael, and Dylan, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her mother, Anna (Tillberry) Cook; her sisters: Irene, Betty, Mary, Violet, Shirley, and her twin sister, Sandy; and her brothers: Bobby and Raymond.
A visitation for the family and friends of Sue will be held on Monday, August 17, 2026, from 11:00AM until 12:30PM with the funeral service to immediately follow. It will be held at Legacy Cremation & Funeral Services - Indianapolis located at 1604 W. Morris Street. Following the funeral, Sue will be laid to rest at Floral Park Cemetery.
Carol Sue Burchfield will be missed dearly.
But she will never be forgotten.
May she rest peacefully, knowing that she made this world—and the lives of the people she loved—better simply by being in it.
Rest easy. Peace & Love
