Annie (Ann) Bessie Nelson entered this world on April 11th, 1936. She was the second child born to Reverend Elijah Nelson and Mattie White Nelson. After the death of her natural mother, she was lovingly taken in by her second mother, Mable Tyler Nelson.
Annie attended public schools in Shreveport, Louisiana where she participated in school choir, theater, and was on the debate team. Annie was also a member of St. Matthew AME Church where she participated in Sunday school, ACE League for Choice, the junior choir, vacation bible school, and the annual three-day Sunday school convention where she served as secretary.
Upon moving to Indianapolis, Indiana with her two boys, Annie moved in with her brother-in law Reverend Wilbur A Freeman and her sister Juanita Freeman. She loved being with her sister and brother and enjoyed the fun her sons had with all of her nieces and nephews.
Within that move, Annie accepted the Catholic faith and was baptized. She became a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church on February 2nd, 1969. Annie devoted herself to the church and its school. She was an active member of the Holy Angels Gospel Choir where she traveled with them for concerts and revivals and had the opportunity to participate in a musical production that ran at the historic Madame CJ Walker building. Annie held many positions on several boards at Holy Angels and was known as being one of its top fundraisers. When she wasn’t participating in church events, Annie enjoyed her career working for IU/Clarian Health, traveling the world, and collecting dolls. She had a very feisty spirit and wild sense of humor.
